  • August 15 - 6th Parent Grade Open House 6:00pm-7:00pm
  • August 16 - 1st day for 6th grade ONLY  8:15am-1:00pm. Student lunch provided.

South Middle School Designated a 

School-To-Watch

November 16, 2016 was not a normal day at South Middle. Guests from Schools-to-Watch were evaluating the school. While the students and staff went through the normal school day routine, the guest committee interviewed students, teachers, families, and district office personnel about SMS. The committee members also sat in on classes to see what goes on and what kind of learning is experienced at SMS.

Schools-to-Watch is an initiative launched in 1999. It is currently active in 18 states, including South Carolina. The initiative seeks out schools that challenge students academically while meeting the developmental needs that are unique to middle schoolers. In the process of meeting these needs, the school must also be socially equitable, making sure all students have excellent teachers and learning support.

In 2013, the census showed there were a little over 13, 000 middle schools in the US*. Today, there are 329 schools on the Schools-to-Watch website. Of the 329 schools, 16 schools in South Carolina have been designated as a School to Watch and South Middle is STILL a School to Watch.
